Plymouth Railroad Company records, 1836-1862.

The records consist of a collection of loose papers and two volumes that apparently were preserved in the family of one of the company's officers. Although incomplete, the records give a good account of the financing, construction and operation of a small local railroad during the first decades of U.S. railroad-building. There are bids and correspondence from contractors in 1836-38; papers relating to loans, including a request for aid to Nicholas Biddle of the United States Bank of Pennsylvania; notes on operations over the road by individuals; and incomplete directors' minutes and financial statements.

The Philadelphia, Germantown and Norristown Railroad Company was incorporated under the laws of Pennsylvania on February 17, 1831. It was one of the first railroads in the Philadelphia area. The Plymouth Rail Road Company was incorporated in Pennsylvania on April 18, 1836. Between 1837 and 1838, it constructed a short railroad from Corson's lime kilns near Plymouth Meeting to Conshohocken, Pa. It was operated by horse power.
